Query fan-out explainer

SOURCE: BAY AREA AEO · BAA-IND

AI assistants don't run one search. They break a question into many smaller searches, check different sources for each, then combine the results. The explainer walks through four steps: understand, fan out, retrieve, answer.

WHERE TO SEE IT bayareaaeo.com/industries → Query Fan-Out, on each niche page

Where the explainer appears

Every niche page on the agency's site carries a section labelled Query Fan-Out, with a heading written for the trade, such as “How AI Decides Which Dental Office to Recommend” or “How AI Decides Which Plumbing Company to Recommend”. The section plays through four numbered steps for a set of questions from that trade. The plumbing page's set, for example, includes a leaking water heater in Hayward, an emergency plumber in San Jose on a Sunday and trenchless sewer repair in Santa Rosa.

The four steps
StepWhat the assistant does
UnderstandThe assistant reads the whole question and works out what is being asked: a type of business, a place and any conditions, such as an insurance plan or an opening time.
Fan outIt breaks the question into many smaller searches, one for each part, so a single customer question becomes a set of lookups.
RetrieveIt checks different sources for each search: listings for hours and location, reviews for what customers say, the business's own pages for services, and guides or press for outside mentions.
AnswerIt combines the results and names the businesses that satisfy the most parts of the question, usually two or three.

A worked example

Take the agency's dentist question: a dentist in San Mateo who is good with anxious patients and takes Delta Dental. The place part sends the assistant to listings and maps for dentists in San Mateo. The insurance part sends it to practice websites and directories that state accepted plans. The anxious-patient part sends it to reviews that mention comfort and calm staff. A practice that is listed consistently, states its plans clearly and has reviews in those words satisfies every branch. That is why the dentist page's signals are insurance and payment clarity, treatment pages, provider credentials, review themes and consistent listings.

What fan-out means for LLM SEO

Because the question is split, a business has to be findable in each branch, not only in one. A strong website with inconsistent listings fails the place branch. Good listings with vague reviews fail the condition branch. This is why the agency's services cover all five signals together, and why its measurement uses whole customer questions: a whole question tests every branch at once.

It also explains the agency's emphasis on specific detail. The more precisely a question is phrased, the more branches it creates, and the fewer businesses satisfy all of them. A business whose own pages and listings, and whose reviews, state its specifics is the one left standing when the results are combined.

Fan-out and measurement

Fan-out also shapes how results are read. When a business starts appearing in answers, the cited sources in the monthly report show which branch it now satisfies: a directory listing for the place branch, a review for the condition branch, a practice page for the service branch. That tells the agency which branch still needs work.

Fan-out and place

Local questions add a place branch to every search. The agency's regional pages note how Bay Area customers phrase it: by neighborhood in San Francisco, by BART station in the East Bay, across city lines on the Peninsula. Clear location details, including nearby stations and landmarks and the neighborhoods served, let a business satisfy that branch.
